2002 PBS story on New Orleans ecology and storms

Snippet from the transcript:

New Orleans has always had a huge natural shield that helps protect it from storms: there are miles and miles of wetlands, between the city and the Gulf of Mexico. When a hurricane blows over them, it loses some of its power. But as we reported a couple of weeks ago, this shield is breaking apart.

And here's the irony: the wetlands are disappearing because of the levees. The very levees that were supposed to protect New Orleans. They stopped the Mississippi River from flooding, but it turns out that they also triggered an environmental chain reaction, which is starving the wetlands to death.

Scientists say if this shield keeps crumbling over the next few decades, then it won't take a giant storm to cause a disaster. A much weaker, more common kind of hurricane could devastate New Orleans.

modern prefab: embracing the "oversized load"

quikHouseRender.jpg

at brunch last sunday we got to talking about prefab housing. you've probably seen a prefab house before, maybe last summer on that two lane highway in the middle of mississippi, taking up space and making you nervous as it teetered on the truck bed.

these days, some cool architects are transforming the concept of 'prefab' from tacky eye sores to modern and cheap housing solutions.

the image above is the quik house, designed from recycled shipping containers by Adam Kalkin. for $76k, the basic quik house kit gets you 5 modular containers and all the glass necessary to enclose the 2000 square foot building.

in other news, a shocker of all shockers: the matriarch of flat pack, IKEA, has teamed up with Skanska to create the Boklok flavor of prefab, slated to hit the UK market next year.

Flickr Photos of the Keep Austin Weird 5k

This guy's got some photos from the KAW 5k. Keeping Austin Weird and sweaty, many participants ran in costumes, like this burly fellow. Another highlight was the Devo guy, red hat and all. I did not, however, enjoy the swarms of scantily clad teenagers.

I have some photos on a disposable camera that I'll process eventually. I failed in my mission to use up the rest of the roll at this afternoon's brunch. What can I say? I was too busy eating omelets and french toast and having a merry time with my awesome friends (merriment only slightly assisted by fresh-squeezed mimosas and Rachel's melons).

32:28 in 103F heat

Need I say more?

This compared to 33:52 on August 28, 2004, on an easier course, when the max temp was 93F.

Not too shabby, I guess.

All I can say is:

It's over.

Thank gawd.

Two Summer Soups: Celebrating The Hatch Chile Season

Gazpacho Soup

Whoever designed this recipe doesn't understand the chunkiness.

While that may be true, Central Market provided us with the foundation of two delicious soups: Hatch Chile Gazpacho and Hatch Green Chile "Chicken" Tortilla Soup.

The occasion? Hatch Chile season, of course. Central Market celebrates in style with the Hatch Chile Festival, taking place August 19-21 and 26-28.

We had to tweak the recipes a bit (see images below). In place of the chicken in the tortilla soup, we used Worthington "Diced Chick" which looked like cat food but tasted surprisingly good in the HOLY SHIT THIS IS SPICEY soup. The Tortilla Soup definitely beat the pants off the Gazpacho, which needed more cucumber.

That said, the Gazpacho was still delightful and made for several happy lunches.

The flavor of the hatch chiles didn't really stand out for me. I was hoping for something smokey, but instead experienced a flavor more similar to a tomatillo. But now that I'm over my inaccurate expectations, I think I'd like to pursue another round of the Tortilla Soup, with fresh hatch chiles this time (fuq that canned sh!te).

Keep Austin Weird 5k - a happy anniversary

This summer flew by SO fast - it was only last week that I realized that the Keep Austin Weird 5k was just around the corner. Indeed, the turn has arrived, and tomorrow at 5pm, I celebrate the anniversary of my running "career"!

It was this time last year that I ran the 2004 Keep Austin Weird 5k. It was my first 5k, nay, my first race EVAY! Since then I've done a handful of other 5k's and a 10k. I never thought I could get "into" running, but here I am, a year later, still at it with more enthusiasm than before. I guess this means I've come a long way (probably more mentally so than physically) and I look forward to beating last year's time (I hope I hope).

Of course, 5pm in an Austin summer is hot as balls and I might pass out under the oppressive sun. But it'll be fun.

Diners, Mac Minis, Rain, and the Mall

Rosebud Diner, Davis Square
Originally uploaded by ECWC.
wow, someone on flickr has a photo of this morning's breakfast spot: The Rosebud Diner in Davis Square. the omelette was delicious, and the staff, lively locals! such fun!

right now I'm at "The Galleria", i.e. The MALL. Most specifically: the Apple Store. Diode is making his first APPLE COMPUTER purchase (it's about freakin' time). He's buying a Mac Mini. HOT.

As much as the mall is balls, it isn't a terrible way to combat the rainy day blues, and a mild hangover due to the delicious reception after Courtney & Charles' wedding (many congratulations to them). I'm looking forward to tonight when I meet up with Jason and continue my love affair with this beautiful city. Boston kicks ass.

sweet Georgia memories

I'm in Atlanta at the moment, waiting for the business part of this business trip to get started. As far as i can tell, this conference is all about *food*. I can't believe I'm going to say this but I'm actually glad there are so few veggie options - i'd be liable to stuff myself silly, otherwise. The salad bar is fairly comprehensive, and even offers cottage cheese.

Being back in Georgia brings back some old memories from that sultry June of 2003 spent in Athens:

  • pints at the The Globe, the pub where I discovered Hoegaarden
  • the hours spent in that windowless computer lab
  • dorm life part deux (and I swore I'd never go back)
  • my peeps: Rommel, Phil, and Allison
  • the basketball court outside the dorm - I never shot any hoops there, but I did spend many approximately 2 10-minute-moments per day watching other people play while I smoked
  • that grossly skinny girl who bought 8 veggie burgers, a bag of chips and two cans of baked beans for a 20-person bbq
  • the chattahoochee river walk with the MIT dude and his rediculously oversized backpack
  • the guys playing video games in my dorm room (AGH)
  • "The Favorite" coffee shop
  • Wal-Mart: it owned that town, sad to say
  • athfest
  • junk in the trunk
  • even more pints at The Globe
  • R. Kelly's "Ignition (Remix)"
  • "delicious"
  • Allison's car with the crappy CD player
  • burninating the conjecture and other quotes inspired by strongbad
  • seeing Bridget Jones' Diary for the very first time
  • a little knot theory here and there

Reflection is sweet, but finding new "moments" to share is even sweeter. I'm off to get me some of that... and a heavy dose of caffeine.

Eastward Bound

In a few hours I'm headed to Atlanta for my first "business trip" EVAH. It's going to be majorly fun. From there, I fly to Boston on Wednesday evening for some seriously good times with some seriously cool folks. I am especially excited to see my fabulous friends, Charles & Courtney, get married on Saturday.

I'll be back on August 18th!

Monica's Muesli "Cookies" - Trial 1

Bearers of sweet tooths may not want to read any further.

One of this summer's many quests has been the search for the perfect snack. I want a portable snack that provides me with a nice balance of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. The snacks available in the grocery stores aren't cutting the mustard (or rolling the oats in the my case).

Granola bars and protein bars are full of unnecessary sugar, fat, and weird additives and fake flavors.

Even the orgasmic bulk granola at hippy grocery stores are full of sugar and oil.

Whole wheat pretzels can be nice, especially when dipped in mustard, but they lack substance.

Dried fruits are delicious, but they're also pure sugar.

Nuts are certainly filling, but the fat bomb would put me to sleep.

I tried making my own granola, but that didn't work well - I had trouble getting the granola to turn crunchy or keep its form.

The snack "bar" seems to be the ideal form factor for the portable snack. Last week I was inspired at Whole Foods, of all places. Their bakery makes a "Muesli Stick", a stick of grains, nuts, and raisins. The stick is unsweetened, but the nuts and raisins provide plenty of flavor.

Stick me now I'm dreaming! Dreaming of muesli!

I'm heading out on my very first business trip next week. Although I look forward to the trip itself, I am not looking forward to the fixed menus, junk food, and potentially limited vegetarian options; now seems like the perfect time to practice my hand at my own joy-stick.

I created these "cookies" with the help of the muesli muffin recipe on Bob's Red Mill website. The muffin influence gave the cookies a pleasant fluffiness, with a nice crispy bottom shell where they cooked on the pan. This made me very happy - my other attempts at muffins and cookies of this design turned out overly dense. The sweetness of the raisins and cranberries balanced the toasted seeds very nicely. The ginger & cinnamon seem pointless (will investigate that in the next trial). The best surprise was the grated orange peel!

Monica's Muesli Nuggets of Inspiration

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup almonds
  • 1/4 cup toasted flax, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds
  • 1 cup whole wheat flower
  • 2 "scoops" vanilla protein powder
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup soy milk
  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 tbsp applesauce
  • 1 tsp grated orange peel (thanks for the idea, Bob!)
  • sesame seeds

How-to:

Preheat oven to 400F. Spray a large baking pan with vegetable spray.

Combine and mix dry stuff (except sesame seeds) in one bowl. Combine and mix wet stuff in another bowl.

Pour some of the wet stuff in with the dry stuff. Mix, and add more wet stuff until the batter is just moistened, but stiff enough to be able to form into happy intact cookies, instead of unhappy ooze globs.

Place spoonfuls of the batter onto the baking pan. Shape them into whatever your like - I made cookies, but sticks work, too. Sprinkle the top of the nuggets with sesame seeds. Put these bad boys in the oven and bake JUST until they start getting a little brown on top. Cool on a wire rack if ya got one.

The Muesli Cookie playlist - randomly determined by iTunes:

  • Jet Muchacho - Manic Hispanic
  • Wish Fulfillment - Sonic Youth
  • Look Back In - Moby
  • Sweet Baby - Prince and the NPG
  • Cars - Gary Numan
  • The Jaezebel Spirit - Brian Eno & David Byrne
  • 30/90 - Jonathon larson (Tick, Tick, Boom!)
  • Electric Blues - Hair

Mylo: Destroy Rock & Roll (and RealAudio)

Why oh why do people still use RealAudio format to share their delicious sounds? It's so ... inconvenient. Still, sometimes its worth chugging along with such formalities to tune into something great, like, Mylo, aka Myles MacInnes, Scottish DJ and master of his G4.

The album is a melange of fun grooves harkening from a range of influences. My favorites this morning are "In My Arms", incorporating a melody hook from "Bette Davis Eyes", and "Guilty of Love", a dedication to Prince that I can't resist. But it's not all remixes and dedications - my ears just tune into these things because I'm not hip to the electronic wave. All I know is what sounds good, and every album on this track makes me grin.

Just because I like shopping at The Herb Bar doesn't mean I'm a granola-eating tote-bag-toting Whole-Foods-shopping "Keep Austin Weird"-tshirt-wearing hempster yup-face

(At least the tote-bag part isn't true.)

How I came to embrace The Herb Bar is a short and simple story.

I wanted to buy a thank-you gift for a friend, something that would help ease his explosive nerves. But what? Candles are soooo overdone in this Bath & Body Works society.

Per the advice of Marcella, astral friend and my window to the chakras, my search ended in a sea of essential oils.

Although I've seen the little bottles at various shops around town, I never really understood the appeal of essential oils. But a few whiffs from the display at The Herb Bar, and I was hooked. The scents are delightful!

The Herb Bar, true to its name, also has an entire room of herbs and teas. I was blown away. I sampled an amazing coffee substitute called Dandy Blend, made with roasted roots of chicory, dandylion and beets and roasted grains of barley and rye. An impressive beverage, though I think I'd rather miss the caffeine kick (a kick in the head is more like it, but how else could i possibly manage my current stint as a morning person?).

I ended up taking home some Lemon-Ginger tea as well as a "Digestion Tea" blend, both of which are intense, to say the least. The Lemon-Ginger tea is fragrant and refreshing. The Digestion Tea currently tastes like liquid bark - this may take some getting used to. But I'm happy - I've rekindled my teatastic curiosity!

And my longing for a hot cup of Dilmah - I don't know what it is about hippy caffeine-free tea, but it sure got me dreaming of a delicious cuppa 100% pure ceylon, with skim milk (and a hobnob on the side).
