In Celebration of the Dinner Party

The nice thing about my job is that, when the work runs out, I'm free to go home. No wasted time killing hours surfing the internet. No trying to look busy. It's cool to be at a place that keeps it real. So as a result, my weekend started a bit early yesterday. I made a few calls and it seemed that everyone was already nursing their hangovers. So I suggested a quiet night in with some home-cooked food.

The main menu: fish veracruz, cumin zucchini, herb roasted potatoes.

The drink menu: wine, wine, wine (and a 6-pack of Newcastle).

The desert menu: assorted fruits (kiwi, pineapple, mango, black grapes, tangelos) with Green & Black's organic dark chocolate - and Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc

The ambiance: yellow flowers from Rachel and tunes mixed by DJ Steph

The attendees: marcella, steph, rachel, dave, and yours truly

Estimated drink units to hangover recovery: 0.5

Best reason to stay up til 2am in Austin on Friday night: to sit outside on the porch drinking wine in warm sweaters and feeling the cold front come in.

Fish Veracruz*

5 talapia filets
4 roma tomatoes, peeled** and pureed
3 roma tomatoes, coursely chopped
1 green pepper, sliced lengthwise
1 white onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, chopped
4 olives, rinsed and chopped
1 spoonful of capers, rinsed
1 bay leaf
1 tbsp fresh oregano
2 habanero peppers, sliced
1 cup of vegetable broth

The fish gets seared briefly in a frying pan with a bit of olive oil, then placed in a casserole dish. Meanwhile, the onions and garlic get cooked in some olive oil. Add the tomatoes, broth and the bay leaf and heat through. Add the oregano, olives, capers, habenaro, and green pepper. Hope for the best. Poor the sauce over the fish and bake at 350 F until the fish is cooked through (about 15 minutes).

Herb Roasted Potato

a bunch of new potatoes, quartered
olive oil
salt
italian herb seasoning

Put the potatoes in a casserole dish. Pour enough olive oil to coat. Sprinkle with salt and herbs to spice. Cook in a 350 F oven for about 40 minutes. While cooking, mix them up a bit every 15 minutes or so.

Cumin Zuchhini

zucchini and yellow squash, sliced
olive oil
salt
cumin

Heat some oil in a pan. Add squash. Add salt and cumin to taste. Cook! Don't ask roommate "can you cumin me?"

* food was cooked after the consumption of several wine units; actual ingredient proportions may vary.

** to peel tomatoes: make a slice in the skin of each tomato, place tomatoes in a bowl, cover tomatoes with boiling hot water, wait a few minutes, poor cold water over tomatoes, skin peels right off!

The Napoleon Dynamite Soundtrack Tugs on the ol' Heartstrings

I must admit that the movie Napoleon Dynamite was pretty much lost on me. I went to an all-girls Catholic high school and missed out on the awkward high school dynamics that occur between boys and girls, geeks and jocks, freaks and meatheads. Napoleon Dynamite is all about bizarre weirdoes, class elections, and the high school prom. The only thing the movie and I have in common is the bizarre part. Replace the jocks with nuns and the prom with a volleyball tournament, and I might have laughed out loud.

I can't deny, however, the brilliance of the soundtrack. It perfectly summarizes the awkwardness that is being a bit of a geek in an outwardly "cool" world. That its siren songs are 80's classics makes the point even sharper. Two songs stand out in particular: Yaz's "Only You" and Alphaville's "Forever Young". Also notable is Sparklemotion's admirable cover of Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time". Are you swooning yet?

The CD also ties in some synth pop to keep you from crying in your pillow in a fit of hurts-so-good nostalgia-induced heartache. And let's not forget the classic Napoleon one-liners that echo in your ears for weeks, especially when everyone around you keeps repeating "YESSSSS" and "Gosh!" all the time. (You can just skip those tracks when you add the CD to your iPod.)

morning gnatness

when i got off the phone with my sister at around 11:30pm last night, she was off to do homework, i was off to bed. sometimes i really miss being a student. the late hours, the missed sleep, the frantic homework sessions! sometimes, the ethereal haze of unrested wakefulness is kind of fun.

but last night i slept.

So i got up at 7am this morning and went for a light 1.5 mile jog along town lake, to the Longhorn Dam and back. Runners call this a "recovery run", an exercise intended to improve circulation, muscle capillarization, and recovery from harder runs. This morning, I was more interested in having a good stretch by the lakeside - how Zen!

Someone once told me that time is a predator that stalked us all our lives. But I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey that reminds us to cherish every moment because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we live it. After all, Number One, we're only mortal.

blog soup

i have a dilemma. ok, i've had this dilemma for weeks, months, you get the picture. i've even discussed before, but have yet to do anything about it.

i have multiple blog spaces, photo albums, calendars, contacts, links, the list goes on and on. so much sh*t!

everything is all over the place, and i sometimes have trouble deciding where i should post, say, my oatmeal recipe. "it's healthy, i could post it on training for the apocalypse, but maybe other people care about oats? fuck it, i'm ordering a pizza."

so in an effort to not put things aside for the sake of indecision, i'm going to try the category approach and just post everything here and not worry about how my friends perceive my food obsession or running habits.

taking all of this at face value, that this is a mere (inconsistent, blundering) ant in the world of weblogs and i can count my (known) regular readers on one hand, the obvious questions is: "why bother?"

pfft. isn't self indulgence reason enough?

so about running. this is where i post the daily dizzle on my run. it was my first run since last sunday's 5k. i ran after work, around town lake. it sucked. my legs were tired (still) and the wind seemed intent on blowing at me the whole time. i actually stopped before i intended, and walked the last mile. how can it take more than 2 days to recover from 26 minutes and 40 seconds of running? i feel like a wimp. and THEN my arms and legs started itching like crazy! before my run, i did situps and pushups in the grass. "what a lovely day to roll around in the grass!" i had thought. i was wrong. my legs felt like they were on fire. i thought i had a weird case of instantaneous sunburn.

tomorrow is a new day!

Easy Fish Tacos

How sad things must seem when my last two recipes are "for one". Rather than be discouraged by lone cookery, I embrace it. Here's a quick healthy meal for chowing down on in front of the tv.

Easy Fish Tacos
Serves 1

Ingredients:
1 talapia filet
1 7oz can Herdez Salsa Casera
1/2 cup sweet corn
1 clove garlic, chopped
fajita spice
chopped cabbage or lettuce
3 corn tortillas

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350.
2. Grease a casserole dish and set fish filet inside of it.
3. Spring the fish, first with garlic, then the salsa, then the corn.
4. Sprinkle with salt and fajita spice.
5. Bake in oven until fish flakes easily with a fork (about 25 minutes).
6. Heat corn tortillas in the oven.
7. Assemble tacos with the fish, salsa and cabbage.

Yummy extras: black beans, avocado, chipotle aoili

Monica's Ultimate Oats

What the British call "porridge", I call the best desk breakfast EVAH. I say "desk breakfast" because this is what I usually eat at my desk at work if I don't have enough time in the morning to make eggs and toast. a university where you can't buy books!?

With Half Priced Books having fled to North Lamar, and Barnes & Noble on the drag having also jumped ship, can anyone tell me where one can buy a book that isn't a textbook in the UT-Austin campus area?

am i crazy? or is this impossible? it seems rediculous that a major university doesn't have a book shop within walking distance. and yet... i am hard pressed to think of one.

i will weep if the closest book store is Yuppy Paradise (i.e. Book People).

South Congress Cafe

If you know me at all, then you know how much I genuinely enjoy cooking for myself. It's almost to the point that I get nervous at the thought of eating out because I presume that I won't find anything I like. It doesn't help that I'm, for the most part, a pesco-vegetarian, butter-fearing, yolk-phobic nut case.

Today I got to thinking that it'd been a while since I went out to eat, and that I really need to make an effort to relax and enjoy a meal out once in a while. After all, balance is everything. A meal out means bonding with friends, trying something new, and let's face it - it's so SO nice to be without the nightly chore of dish washing.

Also, I think I've earned it.

I'm going to be mildly snobbish about this and say: no greasy spoons. For me, it is better to pay more for food I'll feel good about than pay less for food that will make me feel like trash. That means that my days of Julio's enchiladas are behind me, sadly. I shed a tear in their memory. I'm not saying that all my adventures will be grainy, tofu, health bombs. I just mean that I'm in search of quality food made with quality ingredients. I'm not saying that Julio's isn't quality food; it's just that their enchiladas are essentially a tortilla tube filled with cheese. It's one of those good-and-bad-at-the-same-time deals. I am going for purified good this time around.

This evening, both knackered from a tough day in the mines, Marcella and I had dinner at the South Congress Cafe, the Southwestern wank-fest on 1600 S Congress Ave. I'd been there once before for happy hour on their outdoor patio. It's huge, spacious, green, and clean. I stuck with water, but my comrades claimed their margaritas were fantastic. This evening, their patio was closed, so we dined inside in a comfortable booth.

The wait staff is pretty chill even though the "cafe" looks like it has the capacity for pretension. Marcella went to high school with the waiter (Austin is such a small town!), who was speedy on the delivery of bread and water. She ordered the trout special; I ordered the grilled tuna salad. Marcella asked the waiter for a wine recommendation. He wasn't sure, but asked the chef who brought her something nice and red. I had some Australian Shiraz. Mmm, wine with dinner! LOVE it!

The food came out pretty quickly and looked fantastic. On the menu, the grilled tuna was described as "medium rare, and extra salty from the chef's tears if you ask to have it cooked longer." Sure enough, the tuna was very much medium rare, and much to my glee, fresh and delicious. It was served on a bed of greens, with carrots, cucumber, and jicama. If you haven't had jicama, it's a white root vegetable (a mexican turnip, if you will!) that very much has the consistency of a water chestnut. It absorbs flavor very nicely and provides moisture to otherwise dry salads. The dressing was a spicy avocado cream fest that nicely complimented the veggies and tuna. It was delicious and precisely what my hungry tummy craved.

Marcella enjoyed her trout, as well. It came with avocado-mango salsa, pilaf, mushrooms, and green beans!! I had a couple of her green beans and, let me tell you, they were perfect.

Total bill for 2 meals and 2 glasses of wine: ~ $45

So I definitely dig the South Congress Cafe. Like everything on SoCo, it's mildly wanky. But it's got what I want: fresh and lovely food in a relaxed atmosphere. I also hear they have good happy hour specials. Sha-zam!

Other restaurants I'd like to try include:

Polvo's - 2004 S 1st St
Cafe Mundi - 1704 E 5th St
Santa Rita Tex-Mex Cantina - 1206 W 38th St

Restaurants I'd like to revisit:

Mr. Natural - 1901 E Cesar Chavez St
El Chile - 1809 Manor Rd

Any suggestions?

There are plenty of reasons to get excited about the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy movie. The previews look awesome. The cast kicks ass and includes one of my favorite Brit actors, Martin Freeman, as Arthur Dent. And, hell!, it's HHGTTG on the big screen. Why not be excited?

i've got legs

I'm feeling verrrrry proud of myself at the moment!

I ran the 5k Bun Run in 26:40! Sooo exciting: it is a personal best! -- a huge improvement since the 10k (60+) and the KAW 5k (33:42). That's an average of 8:33 per mile. I've come so far! Holy shit!

PLUS it was a gorgeous day and there were soooo many people out there running their (forgive the pun) buns off and keeping the energy high.

I have a renewed sense that this health stuff is actually "worth it". And I feel very encouraged to keep it up. Yay - I needed that...

Freakishly Lovely Afternoon

I just had to be on my bike. Ok, it's not even my bike - it's Michael's.

Thanks so much for lending me the bicycle, Michael, it adds an extra level of bitchin' to days like today.

Inbetween picking up my race pack and finding a cheapo running watch, I made a trip to Waterloo Records. I'm not really a record shop kind of girl. I don't browse. I don't mingle. I rarely buy CDs, and when I do, it's often on Amazon or the iTunes Music Store. But today I must have been in a special state of sun-induced comfort, because I not only browsed, but I even said "that's a great CD" to someone next to me examining BNL's "Rock Spectacle".

But my trip had a purpose: The Notwist's "Neon Golden". I'd heard their song "Off The Rails" on David Byrne's radio station, and have been so entranced by it that I had to get the whole album.

Let me tell you: this is the best CD I've heard since, well, perhaps Friday's dose of Fischerspooner's "Odyssey".

I also picked up a copy of some live Ben Folds Five stuff, and resisted the temptation to buy Annie Lenox' "Diva", even though I've had the song "Why" stuck in my head since last night (for various reasons that I'm not prepared to go into at the moment).

"Neon Golden" is definitely not a happy CD, but it's true. It's the kind of CD that makes me want to lay on the floor with my eyes closed and absorb its ethereal beats, much like The Dude listened to his bowling tape on his carpet (the one that really tied the room together).

I hope I'm this awesome when I'm old...

Just got some Bun Run details in an e-mail. One such detail is the following:

"We have also added an additional age category of 81 and over due to popular demand."

That's really damn cool. I hope I'm still running about town when I'm 81 (and over).

AutoStitch is Awesome

pano.jpg

AutoStitch is the world's first fully automatic 2D image stitcher. Capable of stitching full view panoramas without any user input whatsoever, AutoStitch is a breakthrough technology for panoramic photography, VR and visualisation applications.

I used it on these crappy Florence pics I happened to have sitting around and it worked well - and fast! At the moment there's only a Windows version. I can't wait to try this out on some of my London panorama attempts.

The Schlotzsky's Bun Run is this Sunday, April 24, and it promises to be a fun-filled morning (weather permitting!). In past years, thousands of people turn up for this thing, so the energy should be high and the buns shall be a-bouncing. The race starts at 8am by Auditorium Shores, so come out and cheer us on, or register and run with us!

How To Be Creative

Hugh Macleod is known for his back-of-the-business-card doodles which portray his cynical but honest (and funny as hell) view of modern life. He also has compiled a great list (which he's turning into book), "How to Be Creative".

It's a nice reminder of stuff we already know, like…

6. Everyone is born creative; everyone is given a box of crayons in kindergarten.

8. Companies that squelch creativity can no longer compete with companies that champion creativity.

11. Don't try to stand out from the crowd; avoid crowds altogether.

And in your spare time, I highly recommend checking out the rest of the site because his art is awesome. You can even order his art on the back of your own business cards.

Planners and Journals: Keeping it Personal

Doug Johnston has a great post on journaling. Many of us who start a journal don't write in it past its first day of conception. Doug has some very inspirational ideas for keeping a journal/planner up to date and in consistent productive use. It made me pull out my Moleskin and give it a big bear hug.

Subject: coffee shop suggestions

Dear baristas,

I've lived in Austin for 3 years and never went to the Flipnotics coffee shop because it looks so dark and drab from Barton Springs Road.

Last month I moved to South Austin and wanted to use my laptop. Much to both of our luck, the Austin Java across the street was packed, so I made my way to Flipnotics. I was thrilled when I found the back patio. This place ROCKS!

I suggest you put a sign out front: "Don't Be Fooled! The atmosphere is great on our cozy spacious deck!"

Another suggestion, this one comes from my friend Rachel. Flipnotics is "all business up front but a party in the back", much like a mullet. Perhaps you should consider calling yourself the "Mullet Coffee Shop"? I think it would attract customers because the name is more descriptive of the establishment's services and the mullet is a natural curiosity that would attract customers from all over Austin.

Another suggestion for the menu: change Latte to "Mullatte".

But maybe that's just silly.

Your loyal customer,
Monica

sad broken iBook

weight: ~126 (don't have scale so can't really be certain) cigarettes: 0 (v.g.) alcohol units: 0 (v.g.) tea units: 3 toast units: 1 (excellent)

horror of horrors last night. came home to the sound of "whirring" iBook. no tenderness or desparation would boot her up. as quickly as she rose to her stylistic peak has she plummetted into the datawrekt gutter (datawrekt == german for ownz0red). can't even log in as console. could mean hard drive is dead. and guess who hasn't backed up since pre-London? that means all London pics could be gone. face now has new depression-related spots. spirits are at an all-time low. read ">Bridget Jones' Diary to lift spirits, now can't help but mimic her frantically paranoid journaling style.

death of iBook occurs on the brink of weekend in which all friends are in California. also cooincides with sudden burst of creative energy to write, work on new blog design, and generally get heaps of compution done over weekend.

words cannot describe my... undescribable sadness!

thanks to Rachel, was comforted by coffee and lounge music at Flipnotics. the el Orbits, though often off key, were catchy enough with their "pop radio swing standards from the 50's and 60's, country hits from your grandfather's AM car radio, and nearly forgotten Gulf Coast R&B favorites". would make great a great wedding band. took requests, but didn't know "Cherish". more sadness. more coffee.

Netflix DVDs started coming in yesterday, just in time. watched "The Office Christmas Special". knew it wouldn't be as good as the original series (too contrived) but had its moments.

dear friend, Dave, is going to take the iBook and I to the mac hospital this afternoon. here's hoping for a swift recovery.

Darwin stickers - share science!!

I know I already linked to this in a previous post, but I thought it was so damn cool that it deserved its own entry.

"Charles Darwin Has a Posse" is Colin Purrington's adorable initiative to increase awareness and appreciation of Charles Darwin, natural selection, and all things evolution.

The site contains files of Darwin-themed bookmarks and stickers that you can print out and share with your students, teachers, or geeky friends.

(Dave-Diode says that the picture of Darwin looks like George Francis ... Now that's a posse I'd like to join!)

Roxx0rs: NetNewsWire 2.0 + MarsEdit

NetNewsWire 2.0 is currently in beta and available for download on Ranchero's website. It's really freakin' awesome; they've really raised the bar. The new version has a web browser built in - with tabs and everything!

I'm sure there's a ton of nifty stuff I haven't noticed yet. The download page would say it better than I would anyway. I will say that the big flashing yellow change is the complete overhaul of their blog editing tool. Well, by overhaul I mean they've removed the built-in editor completely. NetNewsWire 2.0 now links to an external weblog editor. Ranchero's is called MarsEdit, also a beautiful tool (I'm using it to write this!). It's all scriptable, and comes built-in with a few cute applescripts, including the "Currently playing in iTunes" script:

Saturday Grillout

I love that Usenet is alive and well among Austin area residents. I was planning a bbq for Saturday, but by Friday I still didn't have a grill. So I posted a message on austin.forsale: "WTB: Charcoal Grill". Within an hour I was hooked up, for $15. What a deal.

The barby was a blast. We had music and food and weather to brag about. There's nothin' like a Saturday in Austin spent outside in the sun with cold beer and good people. Rachel brought a couple friends along, one of whom was English. We had the usual conversation about different phrases and pronunciations, and talked about Jaffa Cakes and Jacob's Cream Crackers and STELLA Artois. This made me very nostalgic and horribly lonesome for London. But it was nice to hear a familiar, erm, accent.

! ! ! Stickers ! ! !

My iBook and I have been through a lot together.

And we've both got the scars to prove it.

Lately I've been sensing that the iBook needed a boost. I thought about painting the cover something sassy, but that seemed extreme.

Last week, Marcella and Stephanie came to my rescue, bearing gifts of stickers! And they are the perfect stickers for my pasty white iBook and my spacekadet personality. I'm so excited! The sticker in the middle is an atom (to match my tattoo!), and it looks really hot when the lights go down.

I love stickers. I love that people get excited about collecting stickers even though stickers have little to no value as a collectable item. They are simply instant joy.

The stickers on the cover are by Monkey. The sticker by the trackpad is a Gama Go.
