
at brunch last sunday we got to talking about prefab housing. you’ve probably seen a prefab house before, maybe last summer on that two lane highway in the middle of mississippi, taking up space and making you nervous as it teetered on the truck bed.
these days, some cool architects are transforming the concept of ‘prefab’ from tacky eye sores to modern and cheap housing solutions.
the image above is the quik house, designed from recycled shipping containers by Adam Kalkin. for $76k, the basic quik house kit gets you 5 modular containers and all the glass necessary to enclose the 2000 square foot building.
in other news, a shocker of all shockers: the matriarch of flat pack, IKEA, has teamed up with Skanska to create the Boklok flavor of prefab, slated to hit the UK market next year.
