While that may be true, Central Market provided us with the foundation of two delicious soups: Hatch Chile Gazpacho and Hatch Green Chile “Chicken” Tortilla Soup.

The occasion? Hatch Chile season, of course. Central Market celebrates in style with the Hatch Chile Festival, taking place August 19-21 and 26-28.

We had to tweak the recipes a bit (see images below). In place of the chicken in the tortilla soup, we used Worthington “Diced Chick” which looked like cat food but tasted surprisingly good in the HOLY SHIT THIS IS SPICEY soup. The Tortilla Soup definitely beat the pants off the Gazpacho, which needed more cucumber.

That said, the Gazpacho was still delightful and made for several happy lunches.

The flavor of the hatch chiles didn’t really stand out for me. I was hoping for something smokey, but instead experienced a flavor more similar to a tomatillo. But now that I’m over my inaccurate expectations, I think I’d like to pursue another round of the Tortilla Soup, with fresh hatch chiles this time (fuq that canned sh!te).
