in celebration of the fountain drink

the spring 2003 semester has come and gone. during these past, oh, i guess you could call them “stressful” weeks, i have found solace not in my usual friends (beer and cigarettes) but from another elixer you can find at your local quix or in vast refillable abundance at most eateries in austin. I’m talking about diet coke from a fountain. two turn tables and a microphone, fountain bevvies are where it’s at. and i cannot quench my cravings. this 20 FL OZ of diet dr pepper is not cutting the mustard. there’s just something about fountain pop that kicks cans in their aluminum asses. i found a website on carbonating at home but it seems quite complicated for someone who doesn’t actually own their kitchen.

as i was saying… finals are over. applied sucked my ass dry, but i think i rocked numerical A. but r&r is not an option: prelims are may 21 and 23. so here i am, back in my office, errr… not studying. gotta work on that.

this past weekend i saw two fantastic (and quite different) movies. the first was The Professional directed and written by Luc Besson. Natalie Portman was awesome as 12 year old Mathilda; it seems like such a shame that she wasted her time on Star Wars. in a nutshell: the movie was superb, one of the best movies i’ve seen in some time. i won’t get into details: you can read imdb for that. 4 stars!

the second movie i watched this weekend was Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I must admit that when I turned it on I wasn’t really in the mood for a rock and roll musical (i was having flashbacks to Rocky Horror which, though fantastic, is one of those movies that i need to be in a certain mood to watch — drunk?). Anyway, I turned on Hedwig… and was immediately engrossed. First of all, the music in this film is amazing: just good old fashion rock and roll with a twist of punk and lyrics that’ll knock your merkin off. This is all enhanced by the sad autobiography humorously told by Hedgwig, a she-he who grew up a he in east Berlin towards the end of the cold war. in order to move to america, he had a botched sex change, gets married, and moves to america, only to be abandoned by his lover and left only with what he calls an “angry inch”. Like most musicals, this one’s all about love and Hedwig’s theory that at one point we were all the same gender and sex is a way of bringing us back together again. Funny, sad, entertaining. I give it 4 stars.

Melanie and Jim had a party on Saturday night. I managed to get drunk after 3 drinks. The good news: mushroom and pineapple pizza.

needless to say, work was not on sunday’s agenda. tim and i hit julio’s for some sunday enchiladas, then had a very nice afternoon hanging out, drinking beer, and being a consumer. overall the day was delicious, and when it was over, i had another enchilada plate for dessert.

ivy has been getting in quite a few tiffs with the black cat lately (the symbolism is uncanny). so at 4a.m. this morning i woke up to a random noise… ifound ivy and the black cat in my hallway (I guess i had left the window open for ivy). fortunately black cat ran out when he saw me. the whole experience was rather strange, but i wasn’t conscious enough to register it as being so.

there was only one thing i could do: sleep in until 10:30am. sweet relief.
